FAA REQUIREMENTS ANNOUNCED December 14, 2015

Effective December 21st, 2015 the FAA began requiring all operators of small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) to complete an owner registration, and mark all of their aircraft with a registration number. This includes fixed wing model aircraft and R/C equipment that was formerly exempt from registration, when it weighs between 250 grams (.55#) and 55 pounds.

  • This registration applies to all hobby and model aviators; not for commercial operators
  • Each aviator is assigned one registration number to be applied to all owned aircraft
  • FAA Registration is online or paper based, fee is $5 per aviator registration #
  • FAA Registration fee will be waived for the first 30 days (12/21/15 - 1/20/16)
  • Registration is valid for 3 years
  • Aircraft flown before December 21st, 2015 have until Feb 19, 2016 to register
  • Aircraft flown for the first time on or after December 21st must register prior to their first outdoor flight
  • Registration is a statutory requirement with penalties for non-compliance
  • This registration process is not intended for commercial operators, who must follow FAA regulations in place for exemption or full registration
